The short answer
Aim for about 60 to 90 seconds. Many industry writers say two minutes is better than three, and three is the most you should ever show. Shorter versions of 30, 60 and 90 seconds are now common.
Why short wins
- People who review reels often turn them off in the first few seconds
- A strong 60 seconds shows more than a loose three minutes
- You can always send a longer cut to someone who asks
How to cut yours down
- Start with your name. Keep it to a few seconds.
- Lead with your best clip. Put your strongest moment in the first 10 seconds.
- Keep four or five clips. Each one should show something different.
- Cut the slow parts. Trim the start and end of every clip.
- Make a shorter version too. A 30 second cut is easy to share.

Questions
Is a 3 minute reel too long?
Three minutes is generally seen as the upper limit for actors. Two minutes or less is safer, and 60 to 90 seconds works well for most people.
Should I have more than one version?
It helps. A short cut for quick sharing and a longer one for people who ask is a common approach.
What goes first on a reel?
Your name for a few seconds, then your strongest clip.
